# What’s a bin chicken?

Meet the bird behind the bandit.

The “bin chicken” is the Australian white ibis (Threskiornis molucca), a native Australian waterbird. Its long, curved bill is built for finding food in mud and shallow water. Think insects, crayfish and mussels. The hot chips came later.

## Why “bin chicken”?

Some ibises have become very good at finding a meal in rubbish bins, parks and picnic leftovers. That talent earned them their nickname—and a complicated relationship with anyone eating lunch outdoors.

## More than stolen sandwiches.

Drought and damage to inland wetlands have helped draw ibises into towns and cities, where food and water can be more reliable. Their urban success is a story of adapting to a changing world. Along the way, they’ve become unlikely Australian icons: sometimes unwelcome, often joked about, and increasingly admired for their persistence.

## A respectable résumé. Mostly.

Away from the bins, ibises eat insects, including crop-damaging locusts. That appetite has earned them another nickname: “the farmers’ friend”. Same bird. Different reviews.

## Steal chips in the game. Give real ibises their space.

Enjoy watching them, skip feeding them, and put leftovers in a covered bin.
